Musical Memories

October 17, 2012

Here’s a nice little feature from Dave Grohl‘s upcoming documentary Sound City: Musical Memories – artists and producers sharing their earliest memory of the events that got them into music. There’s 20+ of them now including Joe Barresi, Rick Nielsen, Lee Ving, Weezer, and Tom Petty among others. Pretty neat!

Available as a playlist on the official YouTube channel the first interview starts here. I wrote about this earlier here.

Sound City

September 20, 2012

Well, speaking of Dave Grohl and documentaries I just found out about him working on one right now: Sound City! In his own words the film is about “the truth, the craft and the integrity of rock and roll” and documents the story of legendary Sound City Studios in Los Angeles where tons of artists have recorded their albums over the years – including Nirvana‘s Nevermind. Dave is directing as well as producing this.

Lots of interviews – Lee Ving, Pat Smear and John Fogerty to name just a few – and if you’re a bit of a tech or music nerd this could be pretty interesting. Produced by Roswell Films I couldn’t find a release date for it, but keep an eye out on their official page here and Facebook here.

Great news: The funding for Scott Crawford and Jim Saah‘s documentary Salad Days: The Birth of Punk Rock in the Nation’s Capital – due to be completed and released in June 2013 – reached it’s goal of $32,000 on Kickstarter today! So, it looks like this will see the light of day. Checking the page it appears that funders keep pledging and as of now it has reached a whopping 33,000! Yay!

An announcement is forthcoming, so keep an eye peeled on their Facebook here and their Kickstarter here.

Salad Days (update)

September 11, 2012

Well, this is cool: The Foo Fighters posted this tweet a couple of hours ago on Twitter supporting Scott Crawford and Jim Saah‘s documentary Salad Days: The Birth of Punk Rock in the Nation’s Capital, due to be completed and released in June 2013.

Great move by Dave Grohl to give a nice push for the project (it’s pretty clear that unlike some other musicians he never forgot his roots), and checking the page on Kickstarter earlier today I was pleasantly surprised to see that the generated sum for the project has risen from about $3000 yesterday to a whopping $14000+ today! Yay!

Salad Days

Well, here’s a nice project due to be released in 2013: Scott Crawford and Jim Saah‘s Salad Days: The Birth of Punk Rock in the Nation’s Capital – a documentary focusing on the Washington, DC hardcore scene of the early 80s. Featuring interviews with tons of scenesters like Henry Rollins (S.O.A./Black Flag), HR (Bad Brains) and Dave Grohl (Scream) the pair is now looking for production funds via Kickstarter:

As we finish up the pre-production phase, we need your help. Your donations will offset the upcoming costs of editing, animation, graphics, mastering, color correction, sound editing, travel and more.

Pledges range from $10 (receive an autographed postcard) up to $3,500 (the filmmakers promise to build a shrine to you in their living room, plus other perks like a free DVD, t-shirt, poster etc.), so check it out here and write some encouraging words on their Facebook here.

UPDATE: Yeah, well, I just had to join in on this. The trailers look great, and there’s an amazing line-up of people being interviewed so I’ve got a good feeling about it!
