REVIEW: The CRY – Dangerous Game LP

February 4, 2014

Note: This review originally appears on the CRKO Fanzine blog. Read it in full here.

Cry-DangerousGame_LPI was introduced to THE CRY! in early 2012 when I stumbled across the then-digital only release of their “s/t” debut album. Delivering twelve power pop tracks in the EXPLODING HEARTS vein I was completely blown away by their songwriting skills and impeccable delivery. Well, two years have passed and the band have just finished up recording their second album and had the courtesy of sending me a promo, to which I’m much obliged.

Kicking off with the B.T.O.-esque “Discotheque”, the band launches into ten tracks of perfectly written power pop gems with a healthy dose of rock’n’roll, garage and glam thrown in for good measure – and there’s even some shuffle to boot! Influences intact I still hear a band that’s matured and have taken their songwriting skills to a whole new level. Somehow this affair got me thinking of THE CLASH circa “Give ‘Em Enough Rope” – not that they sound anything like it, but I can sense a similar development of their sound as touring, writing and gigging made them gel as a band that in a similar manner let their influences shine through without aping anyone.

The end result is a true party album with ten consecutive hits, a great sounding effort delivered with sweat and passion and every time it ends I find myself wanting to hear more – the tell-tale sign of a truly great record. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if this made Best of 2014 lists towards the end of the year. A+. Get it => release-date: March 1, 2014.

Kodak Moment

Signed, sealed, delivered...

Yass! This was posted earlier today and the new issue of CRKO Fanzine is printed, packed and being mailed out as of this writing. I’m not too sure if you still can reserve your copy via email, but just in case go visit them on Blogspot and get all the info you need. The first 100 copies comes with a bonus flexi disc and it’s crammed with interviews with Mickey Leigh (talking about Joey Ramone), Nikki Corvette, my mammoth interview with Australian musician The Jimmy C, and the second installment of the huge Canadian special! Only 8 Euros, but that does not include postage.

Anyway, this looks great! And the guys that spent all afternoon/evening in Germany packing it says the sleeve art is just gorgeous. I’m excited as hell and looking forward to receiving my copy some time next week!

Well, editor-in-chief Bernd Fischer just posted this on CRKO Fanzine‘s official page on Facebook as well as the blog; Pre-orders are now accepted for this 88 page beast crammed with columns, interviews and reviews (just like me Bernd likes his info beefy). It comes with a free 7″ EP with Canadian outfit Strange Attractor courtesy P.Trash Records, but if you pre-order you also receive a free flexi-disc with Swiss madman Reverend Beatman as an added bonus. Be quick though, ’cause that only applies for the first 100 copies and Friday is shipping day.

More info about the issue and how to order can be found via the blog here.

Out Soon!

Well, as this was just posted on CRKO Fanzine‘s official page on Facebook, I’m guessing the new issue will hit the streets any time soon now. Featuring among other things the debut of my TapeMix – Best of Bandcamp column plus a beefy interview I made with The Jimmy C – wrapped in a nice cover artwork made by yours truly. From what I understand from editor-in-chief Bernd Fischer this is actually a super beefy double issue, so there’s gonna be tons of nice articles and interviews – something I’m looking forward to sink my teeth into.

I’m not too sure exactly where you’ll be able to get a copy, but I make sure to look that up once it’s time to announce its release.

(I Wanna Wanna Be A) Male Model

September 25, 2012

Well, the Swedish Mail brought me a nice lil’ gift yesterday: The CRKO Fanzine t-shirt! Yes, these cotton pieces of high fashion was printed in a limited edition and sent out to the staff the last couple of weeks and I gotta admit mine fits me like a glove. Or, uh, t-shirt I guess. Took a picture of it and sent it off to Editor-in-Chief Bernd Fischer yesterday as a thank-you note and today I find myself being the poster boy for it on their Facebook:

Today’s handsome dude: Magnus (of The Cymatics) from Sweden! Thanx man! 🙂 Still some shirt-sizes left for all those who don’t have it! Write if you want one…

These look great and if you want one drop ’em a line here. Speaking of the lifestyles and hardships of us male models; Here’s the Undertones‘ classic:

A Lil’ Update

May 21, 2012

Well, I was sick as a dog last week. Started off late on Sunday evening with me feeling kinda sluggish but I sure as hell wasn’t expecting to wake up early Monday morning looking (and feeling) like something out of Lucio Fulci‘s Zombie Flesh Eaters. I’m better now but still can’t help feeling I missed out on a week’s work. Call me a workaholic.

A bit of news. My debut column TapeMix – Best of Bandcamp and a beefy interview I did with Jamie Coghill (aka The Jimmy C) has been sent off to the editor at CRKO after I spent the weekend editing it.  I’m excited about this and am really looking forward to help spreading the word of cool, unknown music. The site is still up and running so check it out here.

And finally, my fave musical project ever – The Norliss Tapes – has a site up and running on Bandcamp! Our first two releases A Little Bit Tipsy and A Trip to the Moon! are available now with a third entitled Bad Robot EP coming soon-ish (got a little bit of tweaking left to do!) Listen to the sample track Zero Gravity Moonstomp below and check out the rest of our stuff here. ‘Til next time.
