Black Friday and Murder

November 29, 2013

Check out the new Call Me Greenhorn EP entitled Cutthroats at Midnight. With a total of seven tracks, it’s a mini-OST with a murder theme (insert evil laugh if wanted). The title track was written for UK photographer Robert Boud‘s video project The Modern Day Holocaust and mixes John Carpenter with a Jamaican dub feel in the King Tubby vein. An additional six tracks was added – including what I call a “Moog Mayhem” version of the title track! Get it here.

As an added bonus I’m joining the Black Friday craziness! Starting today you’ll get a 40% discount on all my releases. Just enter the code “Sovac” during checkout to get it. The offer expires on Monday December 2nd at 11:59pm UTC.

Being John Carpenter

November 27, 2013

Well here’s a pretty cool clip from the UK: Zack Dagoba‘s video (and track) Being John Carpenter. According to his blog It’s Full of Stars, Zack runs Memetunes Studio, and, in his own words, he sometimes get the urge to pretend he’s in the studio back in 1980 making a horror movie soundtrack in the John Carpenter vein. The end result is a cool sounding track just oozing retro and I can totally see this being used in one of Carpenter’s earlier efforts. It’s got a nice, minimalist vibe with a threatening undertone to boot.

Now this is already becoming somewhat viral in certain circles as it was posted by Death Waltz Recording Company on their Facebook page, and as far as I can tell it’s getting roughly 1,000 hits per day. Good news for Zack as it enables him to reach more fans (and clients), and, who knows, maybe this will make the retro soundtrack labels start noticing the modern outfits that produce these sounds today. Pink Hulk Version

November 24, 2013

So yesterday was one of those kinda laid back affairs spent pretty much just hanging out at home. Something everybody keeps telling me I definitely should do more, but my thwarted work ethic kinda ixnays every time. I slept in late – FYI that means 7:30 a.m. – and had some kick-ass hash browns for breakfast. I love those and nowadays I do them in the oven ’cause it makes ’em a bit more crispy and gives ’em a nice crust that’s just yummylicious to eat. Yes, it’s a word. I just invented it.

Took some time to go through a bunch of VHS classics I’ve got collecting dust like Neon Maniacs and The Video Dead, as well as some not-so-classic fare like Robot Holocaust. Good thing I’m one of those people that refuse to deem my tastes to be superior and waste time pointing out the flaws of others’ creations (it’s a side-effect of being a fan of Ed Wood I guess) ’cause if I was I’d say that the latter movie is one of those affairs that if you just manage to get through the initial twenty minutes it’ll get much, much worse.

Anyway, it just wouldn’t be me if I somehow didn’t find the time to actually do something creative even though I told myself I was having a day off. So I also took the time to twiddle – note, not work! – with Call Me Greenhorn‘s Pink Hulk and ended up with Pink Hulk Version, focusing on the beat while replacing the bass with a gnarly Moog. It was a fun endeavor – twiddling always is as I just do whatever the heck pops up in my head – and the end results surprisingly good so I added it to the “single” making it an EP. Check it out.

Sex in Comics!

November 23, 2013

sex comic01

Well, this is just too funny. Cartoonist Mitch O’Connell collected one hundred panels filled with double entendres from comics between 1940 up to 1970. Ranging from dumb cheap shots to laugh-out-loud funny to the damn near sublime, his Sex in Comics scans everything from Superman and Batman to The Archies and lesser known obscurities. More fun than I’d like to admit! Check it out here.

Killer Deal

Here we go with the latest batch of prints available via my Society 6! Got four designs finished for Serial Killer MagazineRichard Ramirez, Ed Gein, Albert Fish and Ted Bundy –  plus two woodcuts, including one weird sort of tribute to Daniel Johnston.

The latter prints were a bit fun to do as I’ve never really tried it before. The images were cut, photographed and then finished in Photoshop with okay results. The true crime illustrations are a blend of all kinds of imagery and I really went for trying to make these murderers look as twisted and messed up as they were in real life.

All in all six new art prints, and if you order via this link you’ll get free shipping worldwide! The offer expires November 17, 2013 at Midnight Pacific Time and excludes framed art prints, stretched canvases and throw pillows with insert. Check ’em out, spread the word and “like” my Facebook!

Alan Forbes benefit

November 13, 2013

alanforbes

Via the Secret Serpents official blog comes bummer news:

On Monday, October 21st, Alan Forbes was attacked in the Lower Haight neighborhood of San Francisco. The attack left him with two skull fractures and damage to his right eye.

As do a lot of artists, he has no insurance to cover the growing medical expenses. To help cover the medical expenses there are two benefit shows set up in San Francisco as well as other fundraisers. Each show will have silent auctions.

Contributing bands include acts such as Queens of the Stone Age and AFI, with artists including personal fave Stainboy.

Get details via the blog or their official page on Facebook. Spread the word!

“If you are gonna drive, drive dirty!” Via the Daily Grindhouse page on Facebook I found this Sonny Chiba ad for Toyota Big Carina. Personally I always thought The Streetfighter would drive a gas guzzling 70’s GTO or something, but hey, I still remember the larynx-ripping end scene of said movie and am not gonna question the guy.

Happy Birthday, Ennio!

Auguri!

Auguri!

Happy Birthday, maestro Ennio Morricone, born November 10, 1928! His 60’s stuff is just brilliant and have been such an influence on me. Very few composers managed to pull off such a great mix of contemporary “pop” sounds with both avant garde and classical music. No matter the subject, budget or any other constraints, every film benefitted from his work. It’s iconic these days, but back in the mid-60’s, his The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly soundtrack was deemed quite futuristic and genre defying.

Treat yourself to some marvellous sounds by checking out Morricone Rocks‘ amazing playlist on YouTube, collecting tons of his work (that I wrote about earlier here) at http://www.youtube.com/user/MorriconeRocks, and how about giving my Morricone-inspired EP The Ghost of Lee Van Cleef a spin below:

Life of Crime

November 9, 2013

Well, I’ll be brief: I’ve recently been asked to join the contributing staff – or, make that asked to contribute – of U.S. true crime magazine Serial Killer Magazine. I sent off my Society 6 portfolio this past week – available here, natch – and editor-in-chief James Gilks answered with an email expressing his interest in using my illustrations for an upcoming issue.

That’s pretty much all the info I have to share at the moment. You’ll find more information about this mammoth graphic novel (that used to be distributed by Barnes and Nobel no less!) via their official website, and I’ll post updates later on.
