Oh, the Irony!

February 17, 2013

This is just too funny not to share: Via ABC.net in Australia I find out that the iconic anti-piracy ad everybody’s seen if they’ve ever popped in a DVD into their player for the past, oh, I’d say five years at least, actually uses stolen music! You read that right. The song is un-licensed, pirated and certainly wasn’t paid for by anyone.

Apparently Dutch musician Melchior Reitveldt was approached by Holland’s equivalent to BMI/ASCAP – called Buma/Stemra – to write the song for an anti-piracy ad to be used exclusively in an upcoming film festival. Well, again if you’ve ever watched a DVD, this turned out not to be the case. Apparently the agency decided to license the track to pretty much any major film distributor and ,well, it got kinda messy after that. Get the full story here.
